13 BURNING, MUSIC-RELATED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS YEAR'S EMMYS.

SEP 10

There are so many music award shows these days, you may be tempted to skip a non-music award show like the Emmys.

That might be a mistake. This year’s Emmys will provide answers to these 13 questions of interest to music fans. The Emmy telecast, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, is set for Sept. 18, but some of these categories will be presented at the creative arts awards this weekend, on Sept. 10.

Will Beyoncé pick up an Emmy (or two) to go along with her 20 Grammys?

Queen Bey has two chances of winning an Emmy this year, both for her work on her HBO special, Lemonade.

She’s nominated for Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special. (Beyoncé received two previous Emmy noms, for her half-time show at Super Bowl XLVII and for her On the Run special with Jay Z, but has yet to win.) (Photo: Getty Images)

Will Adele soon be three-quarters of her way to a coveted EGOT?

The English superstar, who has won 10 Grammys and an Oscar, is nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special for NBC’s Adele Live in New York City.

If she wins, she’ll just need a Tony to complete the sweep of leading show business awards. (Photo: Getty Images)

Will Diane Warren’s “‘Til It Happens to You” win an Emmy, to make up for its Grammy and Oscar losses?

The song from The Hunting Ground, a documentary about campus rape which aired on CNN, is nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. The song was nominated for a Grammy earlier this year, but lost to “Glory” from Selma. It was also nominated for an Oscar, but lost to “The Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre.

(Lady Gaga, who recorded it, shared in the Grammy and Oscar nominations, but was denied an Emmy nom on the grounds that her songwriting contribution was too minor. Who knew the Emmys were so stringent?) (Photo: Getty Images)

Will Danny Elfman win his first Emmy in more than a decade?

The musician, who rose to fame in the ’80s in the new wave band Oingo Boingo, is nominated for Outstanding Music Direction for PBS’s Danny Elfman’s Music From the Films of Tim Burton.

Will Grease Live! win more Emmys than The Wiz Live!?

Fox’s Grease Live! led its rival in term of nominations. It amassed 10 noms (including Outstanding Special Class Program), compared to six for NBC’s The Wiz Live!

This marked a reversal of fortunes from the theatrically released film versions of these musicals. The Wiz received four Oscar nominations, compared to just one for Grease. Will The Voice win for Outstanding Reality—Competition Program for the third time in the past four years?

The NBC smash is nominated for six Emmys, including Outstanding Reality?Competition Program.

Fox’s American Idol was nominated in just two categories in its final season. It was passed over for a nom for Outstanding Reality?Competition Program for the fifth year in a row.

Before that, the groundbreaking show was nominated in that category nine years in a row, but never won. Idol will receive a special Governors Award this year instead. (Photo: Getty Images)

Will Ryan Seacrest finally win an Emmy for his work on American Idol?

The boyish mogul has been nominated 11 previous times for his work on the Fox show, but lost every time. He has one last chance this year.

Seacrest is nominated for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality?Competition Program. (Seacrest has won an Emmy, as executive producer of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, but, since Idol is his claim to fame, that probably felt like a consolation prize.) (Photo: Getty Images)
